How do you become a mermaid?
Mermaids are mostly born from great events, some have been around for longer than even they remember! Our merfolk at Mermaid Cove were all humans once, just like me and you, but by the sheer power of a red moon (one of the rarest moons of all) and a little dash of mermaid magic they were gifted a new life as mermen and mermaids! Mermaids are few and far between, the chances of meeting a real life mermaid are slim and even less likely is meeting one during a red moon.
Why do you have legs?
Not all mermaids are forbidden to come onto the land! Once a mermaid or merman masters their magic they can use it to temporarily give themselves legs for a short period of time. It is a very hard spell for merfolk to accomplish so they don’t do it unless they have to!
Do you have gills?
Mermaids and mermen are only part fish so they do not have gills. They still have lungs just like humans do, this means they need to come up for air similar to whales. (However I wouldn’t recommend comparing a mermaid to a whale in person!)
Where do mermaids live?
Merfolk live all around the world in their own preferred homes, some prefer to live in apartments, and others like to live with other merfolk in the sea. Our mermaids live at the secret mermaid cove, a secluded and beautiful beach that only us here at mermaid cove can find with our mermaid magic!
Can I be a Mermaid?
It takes the rarest magic and circumstance to become a mermaid or merman. This is not an event that can be done or has been done for many years. Don’t worry though, if you can’t become a mermaid you can become a mermaid at heart! Everyone can be a mermaid at heart! All you need is to be kind and considerate to all around you. Take care of every life on this planet and do your best to spread as much cheer where ever you go. Smile, recycle, tell jokes, live out your passions! The world is your oyster.
What do Mermaids eat?
Anything really! Seaweed salad, coral cupcakes, kelp tea, sea lettuce sandwiches LOADS of yummy food under the sea, though our Mermaid Elle is very partial to a vegetable lasagne.
How do you fill the tank?
We use specialized equipment to fill the tank from the water mains on site. The venue needs to have accessible water mains for us to perform.
How do you empty the tank?
We use specialized equipment to empty the tank. We can empty the tank straight into the drainage system outside the venue, or via the venues inside drainage facilities.
How much space in front of the tank do we need?
The performance area of 2meters should be kept clear at all times. We recommend a space of 3.5 meters in front of the tank for optimum viewer safety during meet and greets. This space can change depending on your event specifications and show package you choose.
Why do you need the room/storage behind the tank?
Our beautiful mermaids and mermen are really elegant underwater, but not so much on the land. We use the room behind the tank to help manoeuvre our merfolk into the tank and also to give them some down time before and after the shows to recover.
How will the performer/mermaid get in and out the tank
This will be done in our required space behind the tank once the mermaid/merman performer is ready.
What will the performance space be used for?
The performance space is primarily the tank, a clear area around the tank so that vision isn’t obscured and also for our out of tank performers. Dependant on event, our customised floor plan will include specifications for how much space is needed for each performance. A meet and greet will need significantly less space than a choreographed one of a kind mermaid cove show piece, as the performance space around the tank will be used for our outside acrobats, circus artists and stilt walkers during the show. There may also be a splash zone during shows and meet and greets (if the floor isn’t suitable for this, we can accommodate that by providing tarpaulin or similar to avoid water damage or hazard)
What safety is in place?
Our mermaids and mermen are all insured professionals and have had thorough safety training in relation to our tank, props and equipment. We always have a lifeguard on standby before, during and after our performances to provide constant care and aftercare for our underwater performers. During the event the tank will remain supervised by our tank technicians and crew so that no one unauthorised tampers with or enters the tank or performance zone. We provide a floor plan of space needed for performance as well as a recommended distance for the audience and guests. If an event is a performance based event crowd control barriers and rope can be provided to ensure guests do not accidentally wander into the performance space.
How close to the tank can guests go for photos?
Provided the guests are not trying to get selfies up close during one of the performances, guests can go right up to the tank for selfies and photos with our mermaid performers under the supervision of our tank technicians. Guests cannot however lean, push, scrape or otherwise attempt to damage the tank or harm our performers. Should we suspect any ill intent our technicians and crew will encourage and escort guests away from the area, charges will be pressed should any damage or harm come to any props, performers or crew.
How close can objects/chairs/tables be to the tank?
When we perform at your event we custom our shows and packages to you. This means that the space we need will depend on your specifications. A meet and greet will need significantly less space than a full Mermaid Cove performance, however the absolute minimum distance objects can be from the tank is 2meters (depending on the object even this can restrict vision for certain audience members and guests, so we recommend to avoid setting anything up close to the tank).
How long before the event do you need to set up?
Absolute minimum of 12 hours to set up, fill and heat the tank, however we recommend 24 hours prior to the event to account for any technical difficulties that may occur at the venue.
How long does the tank take to fill up?
As our tank is a spectacular size, it would take a maximum of 12 hours to fill depending on water pressure of your local area (multiple taps will decrease the fill time). However we recommend a minimum of 15hours prior to the event for set up, filling and heating of the tank to a safe performance temperature.
How much does it cost to fill the tank?
It costs between £10-£30 to fill our tank for performances depending on your water supplier.
Does the tank require mains water or electricity?
Yes, we need standard electrical mains to attach our tank filtration system to so that we can provide the clearest and highest of quality show for your audience. Water is taken from any tap using specialised adaptors.
How far away from a mains plug can you be?
Extensions can be put in place up to 100meters, however should this run across walk ways cable ducts must be put in place.
Do you need anywhere to get changed?
We can make use of any facilities given to use for initial costume and makeup, however we map out a designated space for our mermaid performers behind our tank out of view for easier access and mobility to enter our performance tank.
What is the field of view like?
The tank has one viewing side which is a huge window made up of clear thick acrylic for strength and easy viewing from a face on angle. We feel this optimises the field of view so that the performance is always faced towards the audience.
Do you have your own speakers/music/sound
We can run our Mermaid Cove music through the venues monitor systems, should the venue not have any we can provide our own sound systems.
